Show only to dip the water up by the bucket-full. It was so cold and clear. He also made an outdoor toilet out of orange crates covered with gunny sacks. This out-door comfort station had one hole and was hid in a tangle of haw berry bushes. Each year the little portable toilet would be carted home and put away for the next year's outing. When we broke carp, Grandfather buried and/or burned every bit of garbage, scraps of waste. He left a clean place behind him. The men played horseshoes while the women tried their skill at soft ball. The darning basket was toted along and brought out when there was a lull in the excite¬ment. Mending baskets were also brought along so the housewife could catch up on much of her work. Evenings were spent sitting around the campfire, singing and telling stories while the glowing red campfire sparkled and burned. There was much corn popping and taffy pulling. There was so much music in the crowd! My grandmother, all the aunts and unc¬les and my Dad were such good singers! They made the Valley ring with their beaut¬iful singing of church hymns and popular songs of the day. Anyone else there al¬ways joined in with the family for fun and frolic. The Robinson family and other nearby neighbors came down to the grove to list¬en and sing along with us across the River. When my Grandfather found out about it he invited the families to join in, which they did. One didn't need a fishing license in 'them days' and the men would pull a wagon box into the middle of the stream and pull out the tailgate. After a while the tailgate would be replaced and the wagon pulled to the shore. Almost every time the wagon box would be filled with fresh fish which were native to the stream. As soon as the men cleaned their catch the women got out the frying pan, and what a feast we did have! As I got to be a teen-ager cars were the means of transportation on the camp outings. This sort of changed things. Then smaller groups could travel further away to camp and have outings. I was finally married and moved to North Ogden, but I remember the thrill of the wonderful outings we had in Mountain Green on the Weber River. I salute the little community and all who live there. Also Muriel Shupe, a very special person whom I love very much. Sincerely, Veda Arave, North Ogden 88 |
