I was not quite one year old when my parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I had my share of troubles which the Saints passed thro¬ugh. I heard my mother tell that while we were at Far West the mobs took Joseph and Hyrum and others and jailed them in Jackson County, Missouri. At the time of the Hauns Mill Massacre she stood with me in her arms, ready to hand me over to be killed first, then she was willing to die. We later moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, and as I grew older I assisted in build¬ing that beautiful City. I was well acquainted with Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Fa¬ther and Mother Smith, Sr., and also William and Don Carlos. My father, being a tailor, made their clothes and I used to take Joseph's and Hyrum's clothes to the Prophet's home. His mother, Lucy, once showed me the mummies. They appeared as natural as any other person would after being dried, as they were. They were the color of dark sole leather. Father Smith once gave me a great blessing, and I recollect many things that transpired in Nauvoo. I was baptized and confirmed in the Spring of 1844, previous 116 |
