Show Ira Stephen Spaulding on Strawberry Creek 1870-1871 IRA STEPHEN SPAULDING PHOEBE FRANCE No Picture Available In 1871 Ira Stephen and Phoebe Zellnora France Spaulding moved to Mountain Green, on a farm they had purchased from his brother, Eli David. They had formerly lived in Uintah where their first child, Eleanor Zell¬nora, was born. Julius Stephen and Nettie May were born in Mountain Green. Ira Stephen Spaulding was bom 19 May 1849, in Salt Lake City. His parents were Ira Newton and Eliza Drake Spaulding. They had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Crown Point, New York. The Spaulding family moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1842, crossed the great Mississippi River and traveled to Winter Quarters, Iowa. The family left for the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1848. Following his marriage to Phoebe Zellnora France, 29 August 1868, the young couple lived for a short time in Centerville, moving to Uintah, then to Mountain Green. Phoebe Zellnora France was born 11 March 1852, in Salt Lake City, a daughter of Joseph David and Mary Ellen Kudor France. She had grown up in Centerville where her father owned a farm. Phoebe was 16 and Stephen 19 when they married. In a record book kept by John Robinson Jr., the name of Ira Stephen Spaulding is listed as a member of a committee which was instrumental in the erection of a new school house between Dry and Gordon Creeks. The farm which Stephen purchased from his brother was located on Strawberry Creek in the western area of the settlement. This was farm land and it is assumed that the land was cultivated. In addition Stephen worked as a track walker for the Union Pacific Railroad Company, checking for rocks which may have rolled onto the tracks. By 1885 the Spaulding family had moved from Mountain Green to Uintah where two more children, George and Mabel, were born. George died in infancy and is buried in the Uintah Cemetery.
