Show William and Martha Allmark Priest WILLIAM PRIEST MARTHA ALLMARK The William Priest family had its beginning in Great Britian. In 1857 William sailed from Liverpool for America on the ship, "Tuscarora," and it appears that his family came to the new land at a later date. William Priest was born in July of 1828, at Worthen, Shropshire, England, a son of John and Jane Jones Priest. He married Martha Allmark 30 April 1849, in Dudley, Saffordshire, England. Her parents were John and Mary Richards Allmark. Birth date was 15 September 1828, and birthplace, Sedgley, Saffordshire, England. The four oldest children were born in England. They were John Allmark, Mary Jane, Edward and William Jr. William went to work in the Pennsylvania coal mines. Martha Ann was born here. In 1862 the Priest family left for the Great Salt Lake Valley, traveling with an ox train Company captained by Ansel P. Harman. Somewhere in Wyoming, tiny Martha Ann died and was buried beside the wagon trail. Hie family arrived in October and went directly to Kaysville where they were welcomed by Bishop Layton. William wrote later: "I worked for John Gailey in Kaysville (Kays Creek) for seven months and received one fourth of the crop as pay." Two more children, Thomas Henry and Lucy Hannah, were born in Kaysville. The family moved to Mountain Green, Morgan Co. Here James David was born in 1868. There is no record of the activities nor how much time was spent in Mountain Green, nor where the family lived, but seven years later William homesteaded 80 acres of land in Hooper, Weber Co., where he cleared the land and planted crops. For a time William and his son, Edward, worked in the mines in Almy, looming, traveling back and forth between Almy and Hooper. One account claims that William discovered and developed the first coal mine in Rock Springs. Martha Allmark Priest died in Riverdale, Weber County, 15 March 1893, and was buried in Hooper. Following her death William moved to Taylor, Idaho where he lived with his sons and their families until his death 21 May 1897. He is also buried in Hooper. 193 |
