Five more children were born in Centerville: Philip Marlin, Mary Edna, Sadie Eveline, who died at age one, Ellen lone, who died at age 10, and Darrell Lamar. A great sorrow came to the family in 1915 when Ted and Matilda were divorced. The property was divided and Ted remained in the Centerville home. Emma Ellen Wooley was hired as housekeeper. The two were married 8 February 1917. One son, Leroy, was born to the couple, 12 May 1918. Charles Edward France died of a heart attack in his Centerville home, 19 June 1923. He was buried in the Centerville Cemetery. Eliza Matilda Kent France died at Peterson, Morgan County, 21 October 1927. She was buried in Centerville. Emma Ellen Wooley France later married George Washington France, a half brother to Charles Edward. George and Emma Ellen made their home in Centerville. —Edward Leroy France FRANCE HOME ON DRY CREEK MARY EDNA FRANCE 'MAMIE' FRANCE SMITH For about 12 years Mary Edna (Mamie) France Smith lived with her family on the old France farm east of Dry Creek, Mamie was the fifth child and first dau¬ghter of Charles Edward (Ted) and Matilda Kent France, and was born 15 January 1893 in Centerville, Davis County, Utah. She attended Davis County schools and also the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. Mamie married Frederick A. Smith in 1913 and the young couple lived in South Jordan for three years before moving to Mountain Green in 1916. She was the mother of four children: Mary, Alice, Geurdon and Blaine, all born in Mountain Green. Mamie was active in the Mountain Green Ward, serving in any office to which she was called. 197 |
