Show They moved to Salt Lake City, bought a home at 610 South First West. Lucina died 17 October 1929, and John continued to work in the Temple until his death. In January of 1932 he was stricken and died that same evening. The date was 7 January. Both were buried in Syracuse. In addition to Church work and farming, John served from 1905 to 1917 as a surveyor for Davis County. He worked at the Farmington Courthouse for 21 years, mostly during winter months when he didn't have to farm. Verl Waite, Syracuse The Ingenious Invention What Mountain Green folks lacked in material things they made up for by using good, old fashioned horse sense and imagination. Like the temporary bridge built over the Weber River, directly south of the Robinson farm. What an ingenious invention it turned out to be, even if It did disappear when the first high water hit it in the Spring! Cliff and Archie Robinson decided they needed a bridge to get to the south side of the River without having to jolt and bump over all the rocks in the bottom of the river bed. The two were not trained engineers nor did they have a degree in bridge build¬ing, but they did have ingenuity and vivid imaginations. . .and a dream! The two chopped down some big cottonwood trees lining the banks of the river, trimmed them and cut them into comparable lengths. Hauling them to the middle of the river bed they built a 'crib' lashing the tree trunks together so they would stand upright. Rocks were hauled to the 'crib' and it was filled to the top. More trees were cut, trimmed and likewise sawed to exact lengths. These were placed from the bank to the middle of the crib, both sides being built the same. This was the sub-floor. Over these were laid plank to form a floor for the bridge. These were in turn lashed into place. Taking long ropes the contraption was then anchored to large trees on each side of the river. The bridge was built and ready for use. It worked like a charm. At least it did until hit by high water the following Spring. The ingenious contraption came tumbling down in a hurry, much to the sorrow of two budding geniuses. Their bridge building career came to a crashing halt— with nothing to blame but an innocent stream of water. 201 |
