Its designers conceived the San Nicholas facility as a self-contained operation, capable of performing a variety of beneficiation tasks. A five-stage construction program began July 5, 1960, and by the late summer of 1962 the first three stages reached completion. They included the San Nicholas dock and auxiliary port works, crushing and screening plants, washing and magnetic separation plants, a heavy-media separation plant, product storage facilities, and the world’s longest conveyor system. Then workers finished the next two stages—additional crushing facilities, a pelletizing plant, and a steam-generated power plant at San Nicholas.
