Show NOTE ON SOURCES 293 addition to sources already listed in this essay, the Farmington (NM) Daily Times, Utah International Resource Review (General = Setiediat rile te sac Sk br a oh ae ES Cy ee Pha wees Electric, 1978), and Coal Gasification: A New Alternative in Clean Energy Production (Farmington, NM: Western Gasification Company, ca. 1977), added significantly to the Navajo Mine chapter. The account of Utah’s early ventures into Australia drew heavily on Chapter 2 of Alan Tensgrove, Discovery: Stories of Modern Mineral Exploration (Victoria, Queensland: Stockwell Press, 1979). R.LJ. Agnew, “Mount Goldsworthy Iron Ore,” Mining Magazine (Dec. 1966), 433-437, provided excellent information on that project, as did the pamphlet Goldsworthy Mining Limited (Victoria, Queensland: Frank Daniels Pty. Ltd., n.d.). Periodicals such as Mining Review, The Japanese Echo, Forbes, and Metals Bulletin supplemented primary materials in the corporate archives to flesh out the story of Utah’s iron and coal mining activities in the Land Down Under. The historic merger of the company with General Electric created a climactic and culminating event for the story better than any fiction writer could have imagined. In addition to Sterling Sessions’s firsthand observation of the shareholders’ meeting in which the union was consummated, a two-volume study in the Collection, and articles in the San Francisco Chronicle and The Wall Street Journal complemented the recollections of other participants in the merger to make the final chapter of the present study come to life. |
