Show ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A pleasant challenge lies before us to acknowledge those many people who graciously provided information and encouragement over the course of twenty-five years. Fortunately, copies of thank you letters have been kept, which blunt the risks of being inaccurate. Where to begin in recognizing these people involves either an assembly by importance of person and contribution, or a chronological arrangement that skirts the possibility of offending someone without intending to. We’ve adopted the latter. Once the in-depth research began on the history of the firm, many persons assisted with obtaining significant amounts of information including Joseph K. Allen of Utah International; Zeke R. Dumke; Donnell B. Stewart; Thomas D. (Tommy) Dee II, a grandson of Thomas Duncombe Dee and a Utah director; Lawrence T. Dee, father of Tommy and also a Utah director; Murray Moler of the Ogden Standard Examiner; Ernest C. Arbuckle, chairman of Wells Fargo Bank; and Arjay Miller, former dean of the Stanford Business School. Jim Curry, in particular, devoted several months to assure the accuracy of the account. Bruce T. Mitchell, Utah’s senior counsel and secretary, opened the board meeting and shareholder’s meeting minutes, an account which provided an extraordinarily helpful amount of instruction and enlightenment in being able to understand why Utah was so successful. Utah’s vice presidents, as sources, included Drew Leonard, who answered our every question on financial and accounting matters; Weston Bourret, who provided considerable insight on mineral explorations; and Johnny Horrigan and Charles Travers for their respective contributions in financial management and commercial land development matters.
