(Harry) Morrison, co-founder of the Morrison Knudsen Company, teamed with Utah Construction on many projects. pontoons sluiced the finer materials from coarse rock and formed the impervious core of the dam. Another project, a mile high in the Idaho Rockies, tamed the wild Deadwood River, which the Bureau of Reclamation’s Boise Project managers marked for an irrigation dam and power facility some sixty miles northeast of Boise. With the nearest railhead at Cascade, also more than sixty miles away, the dam site could be reached only by traveling over mountainous terrain where snow banks remained as long as six months of the year. In 1929, for instance, workers barely finished foundation stripping before winter drove them out; so the following spring, Utah and Morrison Knudsen decided to get an early start by hauling a concrete mixing plant and two-inch cable ways to a close-in location.
