To counter this pessimism and to generate support and confidence, Six Companies dispatched Leland W. Cutler, vice president of Fidelity and Deposit Company and president of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, to the east coast to visit with the chief officers of two dozen major surety firms. To assist him, Cutler enlisted Edwin C. Porter of the United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company, and A. C. Posey of the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company. Also, Cutler carried with him Utah’s certified check for $1 million—its full share. After innumerable meetings, twenty-two bonding companies agreed to provide bonds for the entire $5 million.
