Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY Government the way it works bestthe American way, grass roots level. All of us in Marriott and Slaterville should welcome opposing views regarding the incorporation of the two communities. Opposition is a good thing. It causes us to question, study, and evaluate so we can make better choices and decisions. In a recent flyer distributed by those who oppose incorporation were several items that need to be addressed: 1) TAXES: Those opposed to incorporation bring up the problem of taxes, and all agree this is an important issue. No one wants "an expensive 500-pound gorilla in their backyard," implying incorporation will bring a large tax increase. Can the opposition guarantee our taxes will not go up if we do not incorporate? What would happen to our taxes if we become the step child of Ogden City? What will happen tax-wise if we incorporate? This much we know: if Marriott and Slaterville become a city it will have one of the highest per capita tax base in Weber County. This is money that comes back to the city from sales made within the city. This means with good sound money management no tax increase will be needed to operate Marriott-Slaterville City. 2) GOVERNMENT: In this same flyer, the opposition implies that we do not now have inspectors, rules, ordinances, regulations, laws and restrictions. Those of you who have had any dealings with the county know that we already have them all. Do you know the name of the inspector? Do you know who made the laws, ordinances, etc. How strong is your voice in making changes if needed? On a grass roots level, you can make a difference. 3) INTRUSION IN YOUR AFFAIRS: The opposition think if we incorporate it will be a "further intrusion in your affairs." To avoid further intrusion in our affairs is exactly why we must incorporate. As most of us are aware, we are under attack from outside sources who care little or nothing about the people of Marriott and Slaterville. Do you think they have our interests at heart? They would feel justified in carving up our communities piece by piece. Incorporation gives us control over our borders! Do you believe Ogden City or other entities in Weber County know more about the wants and needs of the people of Marriott and Slaterville than we know ourselves? The two sides of the incorporation issue for Marriott-Slaterville is an excellent example of how grass roots America can work. The people of these two communities are studying the problems, the pros and cons and their decision will be of everlasting importance for the people of Marriott and Slaterville: Nobody else gives a --you know what and that's the point. VOTE "YES" FOR INCORPORATION!! 141 |
