Show the oath of office to Mayor Butler, the City Council members, and the City Magistrate, Glen McFarland (who was officially appointed in the same meeting). Subsequently, all other city officers were appointed, approved, and took the oath of office either that night or soon thereafter. The initial officers appointed and ratified were as follows: Duncan Murray as Administrator/Attorney, Bill Morris as Recorder/Council Executive Director, Jayna Smout, Deputy Recorder/Council Clerk, and Elna Lucas as Historian. Department Heads: Rich Adam as Treasurer, Steven Mecham as Public Works Director, Dennis Ilium as Transportation Director, Jim Ito as Parks and Recreation Director, and Judi Elmer as Public Buildings/Community Events Director, with Shauna Meyerhoffer as Assistant Director, and with Shirley Nelson as City Hall Custodian. Appointed as Planning Commissioners were: Randy Phipps, Keith Slater, Scott Van Leeuwen, Carl Parker, Carolyn Deru, Gerald Bischoff, and Barbara Brown. Board of Adjustment members appointed were: Ned Allred, Sherry Morris, Judi Elmer, Von Allred, Darrin DeVries, and with alternate members, in order, being Carl Hodson, Jim Ito, and Glen McFarland. Orvil Holley was voted by the council to be the City Council President for the remainder of the year. After the oath of office ceremony, the meeting adjourned for a recess and everyone gathered outside. Shirley Nelson brought outside an attractive assortment of red, white and blue balloons for a symbolic releasing and distributed them to the crowd. Everyone with a balloon gathered in a circle releasing the balloons simultaneously. The crowd watched the balloons float gently into the sky. The evening summer sun shone brightly in the western sky as the balloons huddled closely together as they rose to the east. The people marveled at how tightly the balloons clung to each other, and some remarked that it was an omen that the communities of Slaterville 8 326 |
