Show COMMUNITY DESCRIPTION Community Location The communities of Slaterville and Marriott are historical neighboring communities founded by pioneer families as farming areas close to the urban center of Ogden City. These two communities bear the name of the family which settled these areas, the Slaters and the Marriotts. Slaterville, the largest of the two at the present time, is located west of the Defense Depot Ogden [D.D.O.] between Mill Creek on the South and The Farr West City boundary to the North and extends west in a northwesterly direction almost to Plain City. The Weber River forms the southern boundary west of 1900 West street and Four Mile Creek is the approximate line to the North. The Marriott Community abuts the southern boundary of Slaterville at Mill Creek and extends to the south where the Ogden and Weber Rivers form the southern boundary. Marriott extends west of 1900 West street following the Weber River on the south and an extension of 700 South street west to this river forms the northern boundary. Community Description Both communities began shortly after the Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Groups of pioneers were sent throughout the area, later to become the State of Utah , in order to establish farming to raise food and animals for the pioneer families. The Slaterville and Marriott areas proved ideal for this undertaking with available water, level terrain and good soil. This historical beginning is still evident today with many family descendants still residing in the communities and a majority of the land area remaining in agriculture and pasture. The form and function of the communities have changed over the past hundred and forty years with the family farm declining as the sole means of support and the land being divided for family members to build new dwellings or sold to new residents as home sites. Today, there are many new homes in these communities on parcels with area of one-half or one acre for the families who like the rural flavor of the community adjacent to the Ogden urbanized area. Some remnant farm and pasture areas remain but the activities taking place are a part-time farm or animal raising pursuit while the major occupations of the residents occur with the businesses and industries found throughout Weber County. The proximity of Marriott and Slaterville to the Ogden area has placed some growth pressure on the land to develop into a suburban area complete with business and industry along the major streets. The utility support is also throughout the area with culinary water and sanitary sewer available in many community areas. It will be difficult in the future to resist development pressure as the population ages. The desire to sell the larger land holdings to help finance retirement and the proximity to the Ogden area may cause a desire to increase the residential density and other types of development. -1- 451 |
