Show MARRIOTT TOWNSHIP NEWS JANUARY 1997 TOWNSHIP ORGANIZED With the November 5 elections, Marriott's population voted a supermajority in favor of forming the township. 90% of Marriott voters said "yes" to the new township. Other townships in the county voted in the same high numbers as the first major obstacle to townships, the supermajority voting rule, was faced directly by the residents. This election gave rural areas the voice they needed in an effort to be heard on the development and annexation plans which effect their way of life. By the supermajority vote, county officials were given a clear message on how important this issue is to rural residents. On January 6, 1997, the Marriott Township Planning Board took their oaths of office at the new Weber County Building in Ogden City. Forming the seven-member board are those who were voted in during the November 5 election: Gerald Bischoff, Delbert Hodson, and Bill Morris. Those who were appointed by the Weber County Commissioners: Barbara Brown, Steve Mecham, and Randy Phipps. During the January 6 public meeting, the new planning board voted for Carl Hodson as the seventh member. The next public meeting will be on January 28 at the commission chambers in Ogden, where a chairperson for the board will be elected. COMMUNITY ISSUES The potential development of the Defense Depot Ogden property is a concern for Marriott Township. Residents of Marriott and Slaterville attended an Ogden City Council meeting in December to voice their views on planning issues and traffic problems that the new development will accentuate. The Ogden City Council instructed the Depot Reuse Committee to allow the residents of surrounding communities to have input into the development process. As yet, the Marriott Township Board has not received notification of D.R.C. meetings until after they have occurred. At the Marriott Township Board meeting on January 28, this matter will be open for discussion. Another imminent concern for Marriott is the Legacy Highway project, of which one route has been proposed to travel between the freeway and 1900 West. Other proposals for the highway lend 471 |
