Show SECTION FOUR FIRST WEBER HIGH SCHOOL The Warrior pace-setting tradition had its birth in June of 1905, when a group of far-sighted community leaders combined the various independent schools in the communities outside Ogden into one of the first consolidated school districts in the state. Then on March 2, 1926, the voters in this consolidated district took a historic step forward by approving a bond issue to build the first Weber High School. Until then the Weber School District operated in each community, grade schools that generally went through the 9th grade, and others through the 10th. To finish high school, graduates of those community schools had to attend the Weber Academy (forerunner of Weber State College) or the Ogden High School, operated by Ogden City School District. Weber High School about 1927 The bond issue approved by a 733 to 480 vote on March 2, 1926, authorized the Weber Board of Education to issue $300,000 in bonds to buy a site, build and furnish a "Weber County High School." Because of a strong feeling in each community that it should have the new high school, the board of education decided to place it in as near the center of the county as possible. This was the east side of Washington between 11th and 12th Streets. The site was purchased from three property owners--Read, Barker, and Sharratt for $14,700. Bids to construct the new high school were opened in early April. The general construction contract was awarded to C. F. Dinsmore and Company on a low bid of $184,180. The plumbing and heating contrct went to Halverson Brothers on a bid of $36,000. This company, now the Marlowe Halverson Plumbing and Heating Company, also did the plumbing and heating for the new high school in Pleasant View under a 1.2 million dollar contract. Architect for the original Weber High School was Mr. Charles Wood. 402 85 |
