Show February 3, 1999 Marriott-Slaterville holds first election By CHARLES F. TRENTELMAN Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - Keith Butler was swept into office as mayor of Weber County's newest city Tuesday, getting 88 percent of the vote in the city's first election. Butler's opponent, Randy Phipps, only got 48 votes compared to Butler's 341, in a race that also saw five city council people elected. Phipps was good about the loss after the votes were counted Tuesday night, shaking Butler's hand and wishing him well. Turnout in the election was 51 percent of the 761 registered voters of the two townships. Marriott and Slaterville have been working to form a city since December, 1997, when the asked Weber County do a feasibility study. Voters approved the city's formation in November. Butler said the biggest part of his job starts now. He hopes to have the city incorporated by July 1, the start of the new fiscal year. That means he needs to get a raft of details settled. He and the new council have to get city ordinances, organized, a place to meet found and a schedule of meetings set up. He has to operate without funds for a while because the city isn't legally in existence yet. He won't start getting sales tax disbursements from the state for at least six months, he said. Five city council members were also elected Tuesday. One was elected at-large, and two each were elected from two districts. H. Orvil Holly was elected to the at-large council seat, receiving 209 votes. His opponent, Dennis Ilium, received 182. In City Council District 1, which covers most of Slaterville west of 1900 West, Delbert Hodson received 122 votes and Ren L. Meyerhoffer received 98. As the top two vote getters in that district, they will take office. The losing candidates in District 1 were Judi Elmer, who received 72 votes, and Bryan Thiriot, who received 57. In District 2, the winners were Kim R. Slater, who received 144 votes, and Rob Smout, who received 102. The losing candidates were Barbara Brown who received 76 votes, and Darren Devries, who received 73.
