Show The next day the Articles of Incorporation were delivered to the office of the Lt. Governor Olene Walker, by Keith Butler, Randy Phipps, Duncan Murray, Kyley Slater, and Bill Morris. The certified Articles of Incorporation were picked up by Bill Morris and Sherry Morris on July 1. A copy was filed with Weber County, with the original retained by Marriott-Slaterville City. That evening, the first official City Council Meeting was held at the decorated City Office, with the public invited. County officials, including former commissioner Joe Ritchie, a descendant of the early Ritchie settlers in Marriott, were in attendance. Wendy Simmons-Johnson, of the County Clerk's Office, swore in the elected and appointed officials. All officers and appointments are listed in this history. Shirley Nelson, the new city custodian, brought red, white and blue balloons and the officials and audience released them outside after the swearing in. They floated higher and higher as the people watched, still holding together in the close bundle in which they were released. Many felt this was a good omen for cooperation and sticking together for the two communities, now one city. The first official council meeting followed, where council members began ratifying all the actions, contracts, agreements, ordinances and the administrative organizations that had been previously set up. All officials, elected and appointed, served the first year as volunteers, with the exception of Duncan Murray and Bill Morris. The hours and hours of work, worry, decision making, and private plans put on hold by these many volunteers can never be measured, as they worked diligently to create our city government. All residents of our new city owe them their deepest gratitude. July 1, 1999-Marriott-Siaterville City (with the longest name in the state) was now a reality. 207 |
