Show May 31, 1998 Marriott 'returns' to Ogden International chain's flags to fly following major renovations By BRICE WALLACE__ Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN - Nearly a century after its founder was born in a settlement adjacent to Ogden, Marriott is returning to town. The Ogden Park Hotel, most recently operating under the Best Western brand, soon will fly the Marriott International flag following the completion of a $5 million makeover converting the building to a stellar showplace. The Marriott will be the first ever for Ogden, despite founder J. Willard Marriott Sr.'s birth in 1900 in Marriott Settlement. Marriott left Utah and built his corporate empire from humble beginnings - a single drive-in Hot Shoppe restaurant - in Washington, D.C., in 1927. "We're looking forward to being in the community and being in the community as Marriott," Jim Abbott, general manager of the Ogden hotel, said. "It's nice to bring the Marriott name back to Ogden. We're looking forward to it and we think this will be of benefit to the city." Making the switch The conversion to Marriott, however, is more than mere symbolism. Willard Marriott Sr., born in 1900 in Marriott Settlement, near the former Defense Depot Ogden property. Marriott moved east and opened a Hot Shoppe restaurant in Washington, D.C., in 1927. That was the beginning of a hotel and food service power which would record sales of more than $10 billion in 1996. After the success of the first Hot Shoppe, Marriott soon opened others, pioneered in-flight catering and started a food service business. The first Marriott hotel, in Arlington, Va., opened in 1957. J.W. Marriott Jr. took over as chief executive officer in 1972 and was named chairman of the board following his father's death in 1985.
