Show The Pioneer Post Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter May 2000 Volume II Issue 5 COMMUNITY EVENTS by Shauna Meyerhoffer, Community Events Summertime and our City Fourth of July Founders' Day Activity are on their way. Being a city for almost a year calls for a celebration! On July 4th at 10:30 a.m., Marriott-Slaterville City will host its first ever parade. We would like for everyone to be involved! Come ride a bike, build a float, crank up your vintage car, or just pull out your lawn chairs and watch! Whatever you do, come get involved. Prizes will be given to participants in all categories. After the parade, we will have some fun activities (and food!) at the Marriott Ward Park! We will have a home-made ice cream contest and other events. Come get to know your neighbors. Volunteer to help with the fun by calling Shauna Meyerhoffer (394-7126). CHECKER CHALLENGE - AUGUST ACTIVITY by Gerald Taylor, Parks and Recreation We hope you will all prepare for a fun activity in August when we will host a checker tournament. Grouping will be in the following age groups: 6-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-25, 26-60, and seniors. Checkers can be an exciting game. The following rules will apply: The object of the game is to capture all the opponents checkers, or block them so that they cannot move. Each player places his 12 checkers on the black squares of the first three rows on the opposite ends of the board. The checkers are moved diagonally forward and each player alternately moves on of his checkers. In order to "capture" an opponent's checkers, he must be able to jump (with his/her own checker) over his/her opponent's checker when there is a vacant square behind. Single checkers may move diagonally forward. When a player removes his/her hand from the checker his turn is over. When a player moves his checker to the last row on the opposite side of the board, that checker becomes "king". The "king" is "crowned" by placing another checker on top of it. A "king" may move diagonally forward or backward. You are allowed to jump many of the opponent's checkers on the same move if there are vacant squares diagonally behind each checker jumped. When there is a "jump" available the opponent must jump or forfeit his/her man. There will be recognition for the champion in each age group. If there is enough interest we may have a chess tournament at the same time. Watch for more information about the coming tournament. Start practicing!
