Show Weber High about 1930-31 Construction was started as soon as weather permitted in the spring of 1926. Although the building wasn't completely finished until 1927, the school was used at the beginning of the school year in the fall of 1926. Keith Wahlquist was appointed principal when Weber County High School opened for its first year. B. A. Fowler was district superintendent and Frank W. Stratford was president of the Board of Education. On September 17, 1953, a $351,000 contract was awarded the Maurice B. McCullough Construction Company to build a new wing to the south of the main building. The wing included 18 classrooms, increasing the capacity of the school from 850 to 1,400. This wing was completed in 1954. On January 30, 1959, the new $120,000 Warrior gym, with a seating capacity of 3,400 was dedicated. The original Weber High School had seven principals -- two of them serving twice. Keith Wahlquist was principal until 1934, when he was named district superintendent. John Q. Blaylock was named principal in 1934 and served until 1938, when Ralph B. Sanford was named principal. He was succeeded by Dasil Smith in 1942. Mr. Smith was called into the army as a major soon after the school year started, and A. Parley Bates became principal. Mr. Bates was appointed district superintendent in 1944 and Roy Metcalf was named Weber High School principal. In 1946 Mr. Smith returned from the service and resumed the post of principal. At the end of the year, Mr. Smith accepted a college faculty appointment and in 1947 Dr. Metcalf was reappointed principal. He retired in 1965 and Dr. M. Nephi Manning was named principal. Mr. Jay H. Rhees succeeded Dr. Manning when he resigned in 1970. 86 403 |
