Show June 8, 2000 Marriott-Slaterville residents petition for property rezoning Not all property owners want the proposed changes By JO ANNE KEEFFER_ Standard-Examiner Correspondent MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - A small part of the city once again became farm land after the City Council agreed with petitioning landowners that their property should be rezoned. John Elmer, who lives on 1700 West, instigated the petition which asked the Council to rezone property located on 1700 West and 1200 West from M-2 (manufacturing) to A-l (agricultural). The area includes several auto salvage businesses. Elmer, who was born and raised in the area, said he had built his home there because the locale was agricultural. He said that over twenty years before Marriott-Slaterville became a city, the county changed the area's zoning from agricultural to manufacturing. He said he views the petition as a "chance to get back what we moved here for." But not all the property owners in the area wanted the change. "People gotta have a place to junk cars," said Charles Fraser, an area resident who stores old cars on his property. He charged that "the ones complaining are those who sold off some of their property to these businesses. If they didn't want industry, they shouldn't have sold." The dissenters agreed with Dean Slater who said, "Those who have petitioned for it, do it." The Council agreed and kept the property of those who did not ask for the change zoned M-2. It also exempted the property of petitioner Phil Rufrano, who died before the petition was presented to the council. His trustee, Sam Burnett, asked that the Rufrano property be removed from the petition, saying he wanted to keep all options open. The petition conforms to the city's general plan, and all the affected properties were adjacent to areas zoned agricultural. Aaron Buttars, who moved to 1200 West because of the country setting, said he's watched the area become more and more congested over the last decade. He said zoning the area A-l would be an improvement. Judy Elmer, a sister-in-law of Joseph Elmer, agreed. "The area has been abused for a long time," she said. "It's time to make it right." Marriott Slaterville City to restore historic names Residents will soon be driving down streets with old names since the City Council passed an ordinance restoring historic names to Pioneer Road, Schoolhouse Road, and Old Road. According to Council member Dennis Ilium, they "would only use street names where their historic authenticity can be confirmed." For example, Schoolhouse Road, shortened from the original Old Schoolhouse Road, commemorates past and present area schools. The grid system of numbered streets will be retained, with new street signs having historic names as well as numbered designations. The same ordinance prohibits developers from naming rather than numbering other streets without Council approval. 303 |
