Show Weber Sentinel, October 20 - 27, 1998, cont'd Linda Lundsford, Clerk Auditor, informed the audience on the procedures for voting to elect their Mayor, and City Council members. State law broadened the opportunity for people to vote by mail to increase voter turnout, which currently stands at 39%. We encourage voting via-satellite if the polling place is not convenient. Lundsford also emphasized that we need to concentrate on young people voting. Voters normally have 20 days before an election to register, but citizens will get another chance to register for the November 3, 1998, election on October 26th and 27th at their public library, and at the Farr West and Riverdale Community Centers. The citizens that register late will need to ensure that they take the ticket they receive with them when they vote, as their names will not be on the registrar. Lundsford said there would be no cost to the city for the first election in November as the candidates are on a county ballot. But after November the city would start accruing the costs. A member of the audience asked what the process would be for a library in the Marriott-Slaterville area. Linda Wangsgard then addressed the audience. Weber county has an unique library system unlike any other in the state of Utah. "We want to hear from the public," said Wangsgard. The board meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month, at 5:00 P.M., at the Main Library in Ogden. The question was asked, "Could the Marriott-Slaterville name be changed? The reply was that this was an option to be addressed after the Mayor, City Council and Council At-Large seats were in place. There are several options. The Council itself can decide on the name or they could poll names from the public. The decision would ultimately be the Councils. It was suggested they consider some of their founding fathers, or maybe "Pioneer" or "Millcreek," as possible names for their new city. But again, the end decision is up to the council. There are also procedures to take through the state to complete the changing of the name. Of course there is already paperwork to do. After the Primary Election, or the final election, a notice will be sent to the Lt. Governor, including the name and position of each officer elected and their term. According to the Marriott-Slaterville City Incorporation Time Line, "At any time after the canvass of the final election, articles of incorporation can be filed with the Lt. Governor by the mayor-elect.'The Lt. Governor should then certify it. As the citizens of Marriott-Slaterville gathered to meet and ask questions of the candidates running for the Mayor, Council, and At-large Council of their new city. There were also candidates we did not get to talk to, but would like to encourage the citizens of this community to contact, and address your questions and concerns to all the candidates that are running. This will be your town, Take an active part in deciding the future of your community. 172 |
