Show VOTE TO ALL RESIDENTS OF MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE VOTE Please allow me to introduce myself. I am James Elmer, a candidate for the At-large Seat on the City Council. I would like to express some of my views on the issues affecting the future of our City PUBLIC REPRESENTATION: I believe that elected officials are Public Servants. They should represent your voice. The actions of my opponent speak for him. At the recent public hearing regarding changes to the city's Master General Plan, those citizens present made their wishes known to the Council. Notwithstanding, my opponent, Council President Holley, and Councilmen Meyerhoffer and Slater opted to ignore the wishes of the public. They abstained on a vote to cut back designation of agricultural land for MORE MEDIUM DENSITY HOUSING (1 acre lots or 1/2 acre lots if connected to a sewer) as proposed by our Planning Commission. This abstention caused the new designation to become city law. Do you really want to live in wall-to-wall subdivisions like Layton, Roy, West Haven, Farr West, Plain City and Harrisville? I WILL REPRESENT ALL RESIDENTS OF OUR CITY IRRESPECTIVE OF RACE, SEX, COLOR, CREED OR RELIGION. We currently have only one elected official from traditional Marriott. All elected officials are men. Women make up approximately half of our residents. I encourage and support women to run for office in the next election. I think we need your voice on the Council. GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: I believe in slow responsible growth and preserving our local heritage. I grew up here. My family has lived in the Marriott district of the City for well over a century. My home is one of the oldest in the City. After 20 years in New York City, I chose to return because of the slow pace and the beauty of the rural setting. I realize that growth is inevitable. However, through CAUTIOUS, THOUGHTFUL PLANNING WE CAN CONTROL OUR OWN DESTINY. Yes, I support the right of a landowner to develop his or her property. But, I also believe the city has the right and duty to protect the neighbors from his or her development. Especially when such development will have a negative impact a neighbor's property. We must work to find amicable solutions. I oppose the LEGACY HIGHWAY. It's a waste of money and land and will impact our community in a very negative way. Haven't we learned anything from California or Salt Lake County? I favor more focus on effective public transportation. In cooperation with other cities, counties and the State, we should improve the traffic flow on the roads we already have. Concentrated development makes public transportation feasible. UTAH'S OPEN SPACE CITY: We have been given this designation by the State. It will take wisdom, planning and guts to remain worthy of this title. I believe the best way to do this is to BUILD UP - NOT OUT. By this I mean limit development to smaller designated areas. Concentrate commercial development. Building a 2, 3, or 4-story business uses much less land and can increase the number of businesses while making them more conveniently located for everyone, including public transit, plus leaving more open space to enjoy. Once we open the doors of our City to LARGE, NON-RESIDENT REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS, they can never again be closed. We know that given an inch, they will take a mile. Then SAY GOOD-BYE TO OPEN SPACE CITY, rural atmosphere, slow quiet pace, beautiful views, clean air, quiet streets and any quality of life. We have beautiful rivers and streams that flow through our community. We must preserve their beauty, protect them from "tacky development", and upstream or local pollution. WE HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF SOMETHING VASTLY BETTER, BUT, WE MUST WORK HARD TO CREATE THAT FUTURE VISION. QUALIFICATIONS: At no cost to the city I volunteered my professional services to design the City Seal. I saved the City the cost of a Primary Election by moving out of a 3-way race for District 1 (east) to oppose the unchallenged At-large Seat held by Mr. Holley. I have donated much time to schools, hospitals, churches and community organizations wherever I have lived, as well as serving in my own church. I have traveled extensively and gained deep respect for numerous cultures, peoples, societies and religions. I received two BS degrees from Weber State in Art and Theatre Arts, with a minor in Geography. I have been an ABA Certified Paralegal since 1990. I worked in the Corporate Real Estate Investments Section of the Legal Department. of Metropolitan Life insurance Company at their World Headquarters in New York City. I was the Art Director for Conference Travel Services, responsible for designing their brochures. I spent several years as Manager of the Embroidery Division of Eaves-Brooks Costume Co. (America's largest). Later I founded an Embroidery Division for Penn & Fletcher Co. I founded Zazzoo Designs Co., with clients on three continents. In 1995 I moved the company here to our City. I am an active member of the Utah Chapter of the Screen Actors Guild. As an actor I have appeared in film & TV, on Broadway, on Off-Broadway, and with International & National Tours and Regional Theatres. WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE THE QUALITY HOMETOWN WE WANT TO LIVE IN TODAY. ISN'T THIS IS THE INHERITANCE AND LEGACY YOU WANT TO PROVIDE FOR YOUR CHILDREN? I THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. I RESPECTFULLY ASK FOR YOUR VOTE AND SUPPORT. SIGNED: James M. Elmer 274 |
