If the election passes, Marriott-Slaterville would be the first city in the state of Utah formed under the 1997 amended incorporation law. Marriott was settled in 1849-50 by Moses Tracy. The first permanent settler and the community's namesake was John Marriott. The community is also the birth place of J. Willard Marriott, founder of The Hot Shoppes and the Marriott Hotel chain. Slaterville was settled by Mormon pioneer Richard Slater, who arrived shortly after John Marriott. It has a unique rural atmosphere and is the larger of the two communities. Marriott and Slaterville are now separate townships but have lost the power to control their borders from annexations because of legislative action in 1997. The communities have united in incorporation efforts because Utah's amended incorporation law prevents either community from forming a city separately. 143
