MEMORANDUM To: Dennis Illum, Council Member From: Elna Lucas, Historian Date: February 12, 2000 Re: Historic street names In reply to your request for pioneer/original street names for Marriott-Slaterville I submit the following information. The drive to have present day Pioneer Road so designated was successfully instigated by Norton Bowns. This became the only officially named road in Slaterville. Other than this road and that of Tomlinson Road for 1200 West, I have been unable to learn of any streets designated by name. Second Street, bisecting Slaterville before DDO, and Twelfth Street have always been known by the numbered designation. Neither Orvil Holley or I have any knowledge of other names used during our lifetimes. I have checked with long time residents or former residents with the same result. Those contacted were Violet Stratton (age 90), Ethel C. Holley (86) and Donald C. Holley (90). In the early 1860s many residents living in western Slaterville along present Pioneer Road, left the LDS Church. As a result some Slaterville settlers remaining affiliated with the LDS Church referred to that road as "Apostate Road," but I sincerely doubt that this is an appellation which would be desirable (or popular) to be brought back! 289a
