Show September 9, 1998 Residents of new town mull name change Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN - Weber's newest city also has one of the longest names in the county. When you count the hyphen, "Marriott-Slaterville" is four letters longer than Washington Terrace. That's a handful to put on return address and sure to give anyone designing the city's official seal a headache. The city's present attorney, Duncan Murphy, told the Weber County Commission Tuesday that there has been some talk of picking something shorter. He said the name "Pioneer" has been suggested, because Pioneer Elementary School is there and Pioneer Road runs through it. The idea of calling it "Millcreek," after a stream that runs through it, has also been mentioned. Unfortunately, he said, that's also the name of a state youth detention center located Defense Depot Land. Commissioner Joe Ritchie suggested that his great-great grandfather might serve as a namesake since he was the first LDS bishop in Marriott. "And what was his name?" asked commission Chairman Glen Burton. "Grandpa," said Ritchie 1th a grin, who then admitted is name was "Ritchie" just like his. Keith Butler, a member of the committee that ran the city's successful incorporation campaign, said there won't be any name changes for a while. The new city has more imporant things to do. i Plus, he said, some people like 'Marriott-Slaterville" because it reflects the two towns that made the city. "We discussed it at the last meeting, and that's the heritage, so we'll just leave it at that for now."
