Show Weber Sentinel October 27 - November 2, 1998 Marriott-Slaterville There has been some confusion in the community about where exactly the Marriott-Slaterville borders are. We were supplied with this information by Mr. Duncan Torr Murry, P.C., Attorney at Law. Hopefully this will help citizens of the community that did not receive this information previously. LAND AREA Study Area includes approximately 7.3 square miles, and is roughly bounded by the Ogden Defense Depot and 700 West on the east, ranges from 1000 North (at the east end) to roughly 2100 North (at the west end) on its northern border, and from 1900 South (at the east end) to roughly 1000 North (at the west end) on its southern border. The study area is very irregularly shaped because it follows the boundaries of the Weber River on the south and west borders and is bordered by Farr West and Plain City to the north and West Haven directly to the south. HISTORY Marriott's first permanent settler was John Marriott who settled in 1854, and after whom the town was named. At the close of the 19th century, Marriott had a population of 250 persons. Marriott was a heavily timbered area with box elder, cottonwood, brush and willows and a large Indian encampment close by. Slaterville was settled in 1852, named in honor of Richard Slater, one of the first settlers who served in Company E of the Mormon Battalion. By 1900, the town had approximately 400 settlers. Slaterville, with an abundance of water, is known for its good farmland (especially fruit production) and cattle pastures. In 1993, residents of Marriott filed a petition to incorporate; however, incorporation was not completed at that time. In 1995, a committee of Marriott residents was formed to research incorporation as a town as a second attempt. In 1996 this committee decided to pursue making Marriott into a township. Marriott was the first community to file to become a township under Utah's new township law in May 1996. Slaterville shortly followed, and both communities assisted each other to gain township status. In 1997, the Legislature took away boundary control of the townships and made major modifications to the incorporation law. In 1997, residents from Marriott-Slaterville decided to jointly pursue incorporation. TOPOGRAPHY The city is bounded on the south by the Weber River and the north by Four Mile Creek. On the other side, it abuts Ogden City boundaries and the Defense Depot, which is now part of Ogden City. The land ranges in elevation from a high of 4,265, at the easternmost point to the low point of 4,220, at the west edge. The terrain is relatively level with a general slope towards the Weber River on the south and west boundary of the area. Mill Creek also flows east to west. 177 |
