Weber man voting since '28 By SUSAN SNYDER Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - Being 92 prevents Clifford Smout from doing a few of the things he used to do, but voting isn't one of them. With the help of a cane and his daughter, Myrna Meyerhoffer, Smout slowly made his way up the walk of Pioneer Elementary School early today and cast his ballot, the same as he's been doing since 1928. This'll probably be my last one," Smout said with a little twinkle in his eye. Not a chance, his daughter said. He hasn't missed an election since Herbert Hoover was one of the choices. "I think it's my duty," said Smout, a retired dairy farmer and railroad worker who never ran for office himself. Rob Smout, Smout's son, said his mother was the Marriott voting judge for years. It complemented his father's drive for being an informed voter. 178 |
