Show 6 Before the organization of our ward on April 26, 1868, Chauncy West organised a woman's Relief Society in the districts of Slaterville, Lynne, and Marriott, then constituting one ecclesiastical district. The officers chosen and sustained were Ann Bickington, President, Liddie Gates, First Counselor, Nancy N. Tracy, Second Counselor and Nancy Gates, Secretary. She passed away in 1869, and Cathrine Parry succeeded her. For ten years the meetings were held alternately and regularly every two weeks; first at Lynne then at Marriott. The spirit of the meetings were good, interesting and well attended. On May 14, 1878, Marriott was separated from Lynne Ward, and the officers were Ann Bickington, President, Elisabeth Harriott, First Counselor, Nancy Tracy, Second Counselor and Mary Ann Gill, Secretary. On March 20, 1877, President Young advised the sisters to save wheat. Since then, our treasury has not been without some of the staff of life on hand in our granery. In October 1903, we had bout 300 bushel stored. Some was sent to San Francisco at the time of their trouble (fire), and our Government bought some when needed during the First World War. On February 21, 1893, the Relief Society was organized as the National Relief Society. This organization was affected so as to be in accord with the laws of the land, that they might be able to hold the title of any property they have or might acquire. H. H. Tracy, Sr., First Counselor of Bishop James Ritchie, died April 25, 1893, having filled a useful life. He died young in years, but old in works. His memory will be fresh in the minds of young and old for many years to come. He left a record that will live forever. He built the assembly part of our meeting house which was completed in 1893. He and Thomas Salsburg did do a great deal of the keeping of the records, both 376 |
