The families of Moses and Lorenzo Tracy, a Mr. Cheney and Mr. Rowe located in the eastern portion of Marriott which was later known as Broom's Bench. Others came and stayed for a short time, but then left for Oregon. The first permanent settler was John Marriott, for whom the town was named. He and his wife Elizabeth Stewart Marriott and their baby, Elizabeth moved there in February, 1855 in response to a call by Lorin Farr to settle the area. Later in 1855 other settlers joined the Marriott family, among whom were: Thomas Joyce, William Gill, William Beckington, Henry Reeder, Robert Hewitt, and Simon F. Halverson with their families. Within the next few years they were joined by Thomas Stanger, Caleb Parry, William Morris, George Stanger, James Burton, Mrs. Lilly, James Rycraft, William Hodson, Joseph Allen, Thomas Salisbury, Mr. Hill, Mr. Greenwood and their families. Thus Marriott had received a population large enough to assure its permanency. The first school house was built in 1868. It was constructed of logs and was located at the corner of 1200 South and 1200 West. Later a one-room adobe school house was built, followed by a two-room brick building. At one time the school's of Slaterville, Marriott and Lynne were combined in one district with one trustee from each settlement. Later the three districts were segregated and three trustees appointed to operate the Marriott School until such time as Weber County Schools were consolidated into one school district. This Marriott School was located where the IRS building now stands. It was used until 1916. This photo was taken in 1912. Courtesy Mildred Hodson An excerpt from the history of Willliam Hodson, one of the early settlers, who was a school trustee for fifteen years states, "At that time the trustees had to hire a teacher, see that the school house was maintained, kept warm, and oversee the whole job. Many of the teachers stayed at his home for months at a time." In January, 1916 a larger two-story brick building was occupied. It was located north of the J. Clifford Blair property at 1063 South 1200 West in Marriott.
