Show The object of the meeting in Marriott was to inspect the new building and to hold dedicatory services. The building was found to be complete, all work done according to specifications. The building was considered by the Board to be the best and most complete building they have erected. "A short session of the dedicatory services was held at the new school building wherein Patriarch Levi J. Taylor offered the dedicatory prayer. The meeting then adjourned to the meeting house where a splendid program was carried out, State Superintendent E. G. Gowans delivering the principal address. To conclude the program a fine banquet was served in the basement wherein both young and old took part in a most elegant luncheon." The first teachers in this new building were Mrs. Mable Applegate, principal and teacher, Clara Doherty, and Helena Butterfield (Case). There were many fine teachers who influenced the lives of the boys and girls in the community. One of the outstanding principals who was at the Marriott School for many years was Mr. Floyd Barnett. Courtesy Mildred Hodson This building housed the students from Marriott until the fall of 1938 when the school was closed and Marriott no longer had a school within its boundaries. At that time the elementary students went to Slaterville School for two years and then to Wilson School, located at 1750 West 2100 South in Wilson. Junior high students attended Harrisville School for two years and then grades seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven and twelve from Marriott all attended Weber County High School. A new school had been erected in the Farr West area and the School Board minutes states: April 10, 1941 "That the new school commonly called the Central School which will serve the communities of Slaterville, Harrisville, Farr West and Marriott be officially named the Keith Wahlquist School in appreciation of the work which Mr. Keith Wahlquist did as a teacher, principal and superintendent in the Weber County School District." Wahlquist School served both elementary and junior high students until 1950 when the elementary students were again transferred back to Wilson and from 1950-1966 elementary students from Marriott, Fairmont and Wilson attended Wilson School, with grades seven, eight and nine at Wahlquist and ten, eleven and twelve at Weber High. 53 395 |
