Show desirable. If you will accept this principle as a measure of the effectiveness of management, it follows that superior management is that which causes increases in dividends and capital gains above the average and inferior management is that which fails to do so over a reasonable period of time. With this concept ever in our minds we in Utah's management have tried to chart our course in such a way that we could cause these things to happen. What are the sources of increasing dividends and higher prices for the shares? They are two-fold -- first, earnings, which is the quantitative measure, and second, the multiplier, which is the qualitative measure. Out of improved earnings will come the ability to pay increasing dividends. Out of improving earnings per share multiplied by a higher-than-average multiplier will come capital appreciation above that of the average shares. Notice here that the emphasis is on earnings per share, for it is the percentage changes that are important, not the absolute size of the enterprise. The individual shareholder receives no benefit from the growth in sales volume or from growth by acquisitions or mergers or any other reason unless it results in an advance in the price of his shares. Many a company has grown in absolute size far faster than we have, for we have eschewed the acquisition route even with our stock selling at a price-earnings ratio above 20. But we will defend our actions by citing the record, for an investment made at the low of the market in Utah five years ago would have outperformed for the investor a similar investment made in such star performers as Teledyne, Xerox and Polaroid and -7- |
