For 17 of those years he served the United States Government, briefly in the Department of the Treasury but for most of that time as Governor of the Federal Reserve System and as Chairman of its Board of Governors for 12 years. Under his sound and imaginative leadership the central banking system of the United States was reorganized and revitalized. He was a major force in the creation of the FHA, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank. His was a critical role in the trying days of the Depression and the Second World War.
