Show SO SIGNIFICANT A PART IN MY CAREER. ON ANOTHER OCCASION I NOTED THAT BEHIND THE SUCCESS OF EVERY YOUNG MAN IS AN OLDER MAN WHO HAD FAITH IN HIM AND WHO PUT OPPORTUNITY IN HIS PATH. RALPH DAVIES WAS ONE SUCH MAN FOR ME. THE OTHER WAS MARRINER ECCLES, WHO HAD LIVED NEXT DOOR TO MY GRANDFATHER IN OGDEN, UTAH, BUT WHOM I NEVER MET UNTIL 1944 IN WASHINGTON WHEN I WAS SENT AS AN EMISSARY OF MY FAMILY TO CALL UPON HIM IN AN EFFORT TO RESTORE CORDIAL RELATIONS AMONG THE SHAREHOLDERS OF THE UTAH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, FOUNDED BY HIS FATHER, MY GRANDFATHER, GREAT UNCLE, AND TWO OTHERS. THE CAUSES OF THE FEUD DO NOT FURTHER THIS STORY BUT I TRIED TO PERSUADE MARRINER, THEN CHAIRMAN OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE, THAT MY FAMILY WAS PREPARED TO SUPPORT HIM IN ANY SOUND PROGRAM THAT WOULD GET UTAH CONSTRUCTION GROWING AGAIN. I MADE NO DISCERNIBLE PROGRESS BUT BEFORE THE YEAR WAS OUT AN UNCLE OF MINE CONVINCED HIM OF THE |
