THIS MONTH UTAH IS 77 YEARS OLD. FOUNDED IN 1900 AS THE UTAH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY WITH AN ORIGINAL CAPITAL OF $24,000, THE COMPANY HAS ENJOYED TWO PERIODS OF RAPID GROWTH - ITS FIRST TWENTY YEARS AND ITS LAST TWENTY YEARS. SOON AFTER ITS FOUNDING IT QUICKLY ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS THE LEADING BUILDER OF RAILROADS IN THE FAR WEST. IT PROSPERED FROM THE OUTSET AND IN 1919 IT EARNED $1,600,000. THIS WAS A RECORD THAT WAS NOT SERIOUSLY CHALLENGED FOR THE NEXT 26 YEARS. BY 1920 THE RAILROADS WERE LARGELY BUILT AND THE COMPANY WAS FORCED TO TURN ITS EFFORTS TO OTHER PURSUITS. WHILE IT RARELY |
