WIDELY DISPERSED THE THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUAL SHAREHOLDERS THAT HOLD A MAJORITY OF THE SHARES OUTSTANDING HAVE NO EASY AND EFFECTIVE WAY TO JOIN IN MAKING THEIR VIEWS KNOWN TO MANAGEMENT AND TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, THESE SHAREHOLDERS UNFORTUNATELY TEND TO STAY AWAY FROM THE ANNUAL MEETING IN DROVES OR, WHEN THEY DO COME, TO LEAVE EARLY, DRIVEN AWAY BY THE HANDFUL OF DISSIDENTS THAT DOMINATE THE DISCUSSIONS AT THE MEETING AND CONSUME ENDLESS TIME. THIS ABSENCE OF THE GENUINE SHAREHOLDER TENDS TO LEAVE WITH THE MEDIA THE FALSE IMPRESSION THAT ALL SHAREHOLDERS ARE DISSIDENTS. THEIR RECOURSE HAS BEEN TO SELL THE STOCK OF THOSE COMPANIES WITH WHOSE PERFORMANCE THEY ARE DISSATISFIED. IN THE LONG RUN THIS MAY CAUSE THE PRICE OF THE STOCK TO DECLINE, AND THIS IN TURN MAY CAUSE CHANGES TO BE MADE IN MANAGEMENT. THIS IS A VERY EXPENSIVE AND REMOTE WAY OF CORRECTING SOMETHING THAT IS NOT TO THE SHAREHOLDER'S LIKING.
