NAVAJO WAS RELATIVELY QUICK TO DEVELOP, ABOUT FOUR YEARS, BUT AT CRAIG IT TOOK MORE THAN FIFTEEN YEARS. OUR EARLY ENTRY INTO URANIUM WAS MUCH MORE EXPEDIENT THAN FAR-SIGHTED FOR UNLIKE WESTINGHOUSE WE DID NOT HAVE IN CLEAR FOCUS THE FUTURE ROLE OF NUCLEAR POWER. WE SIMPLY RESPONDED TO THE GOVERNMENT'S INCENTIVE PROGRAM TO DISCOVER DOMESTIC URANIUM FOR BOMBS. THE AEC ORIGINALLY HELD OUT THE PROMISE OF A CONTRACT PRICED TO RETURN YOUR INVESTMENT AND A PROFIT. THIS WAS ALL WE NEEDED FOR OPENERS AND WE WERE WILLING TO TAKE OUR CHANCES ON THE LONG TERM FUTURE OF ANY RESERVES REMAINING AFTER THE GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS WERE FULFILLED. |
