Show 3. DEALING WITH THE BODY BEFORE WE GET TO THE BRAIN, PER POUND OF WEIGHT AND PER INCH OF HEIGHT, ERNIE WAS A REMARKABLE ATHLETE. THE STORY GOES THAT STANFORD'S FAMED TRACK COACH, "DINK" TEMPLETON, LOOKED ACROSS THE FIELD AND SPOTTED ONE OF HIS JUNIOR MANAGERS SHAGGING JAVELINS FOR THE TEAM'S JAVELIN THROWERS. THE FELLOW THEN WEIGHED LESS THAN 150 POUNDS BUT HE WAS THROWING THE JAVELINS BACK ALMOST AS FAR AS THE TEAM MEMBERS WERE THROWING THEM OUT. SO DINK MARCHED ACROSS THE FIELD, ORDERED THE MANAGER INTO A TRACK SUIT, AND IN ONE YEAR ERNIE THREW THE JAVELIN WELL ENOUGH TO PLACE IN BOTH THE USC AND CALIFORNIA MEETS. HE WAS A THREE YEAR ALL- INTRAMURAL FOOTBALL PLAYER, AND WENT ON TO BECOME IN HIS DAY ONE OF THE BEST RUGBY PLAYEERS ON THE PACIFIC COAST, FIRST AS A PALO ALTO ALL BLACK AND LATER AS A MEMBER OF THE OLYMPIC CLUB TEAM.
