DESPITE THE ORGANIZATIONAL DIFFICULTIES ALF BROUGHT A NEW MEASURE OF EXCELLENCE TO THE MANAGEMENT OF STANFORD'S BUSINESS AFFAIRS AND ITS LANDS. ALF'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY LANDS DID NOT GO UNNOTICED. MANY A JOB OFFER CAME HIS WAY, SOMETIMES ALF WONDERED WHETHER HE WAS BEING FAIR TO HIS FAMILY IN REJECTING THESE OPPORTUNITIES TO INCREASE HIS INCOME BUT FORTUNATELY IN MARIE HE FOUND A STAUNCH ALLY WHO CONVINCED HIM THAT SHE PUT NO STORE BY ADDITIONAL WORLDLY GOODS. WITHOUT CONSULTING ME MY PREDECESSOR AS GENERAL MANAGER IN UTAH INTERNATIONAL TRIED TO HIRE ALF AND TOLD ME ABOUT IT LATER. HE WAS PREPARED TO PAY ALF THREE TIMES WHAT ALF WAS THEN EARNING AND WAS SHOCKED WHEN I TOLD HIM ALF WOULD TURN HIM DOWN. WHEN HE ASKED |
