Show 17. FOR THE BULK OF ITS CONSTRUCTION WORK AND EARNINGS FROM THE ACTIVITY WERE ERRATIC TO SAY THE LEAST. CONSTRUCTION EARNINGS NEVER EXCEEDED THE $1,600,000 EARNED IN 1919 UNTIL 1966. BY THIS TIME UTAH WAS WELL ON ITS WAY TO BEING A WIDELY-HELD PUBLIC COMPANY AND CONTEMPLATING LISTING ITS SHARES ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE. IT IS A HARSH FACT OF LIFE THAT THE STOCK MARKET DOES NOT LIKE CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES, PARTLY BECAUSE PUBLICLY-OWNED CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES HAVE NEVER-DONE WELL AND PARTLY BECAUSE THE EARNINGS OF CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES ARE VOLATILE, UNRELIABLE, HARD TO PREDICT, AND PARTICULARLY SO IN THOSE COMPANIES WHERE MOST OF THE WORK IS OBTAINED THROUGH COMPETITIVE BIDDING NOT APPLY TO ENGINEERING COMPANIES WHERE THE WORK COMES THROUGH ENGINEERING WHERE IT WHERE IT IS OBTAINED BY NEGOTIATION. UTAH COULD NOT UNDERTAKE EVEN IN THE 1950'S UTAH DEPENDED ON COMPETITIVE BIDDING |
