TO DO THOSE THINGS THAT TIME PRESSURES EARLIER DENIED ME AND I DO NOT FEEL MOVED BY THE MOUNTAINS LEFT UNCLIMBED, THE BURNING MESSAGES YET UNDELIVERED, OR THE UNUSED PAGES AT THE END OF THE SCRAPBOOK. I AM A FRUSTRATED ENGLISH MAJOR WHO CONCLUDED BACK IN THE 30'S THAT BEING A BUSINESSMAN - RATHER THAN A WRITER - HELD OUT BETTER PROMISE OF REGULAR MEALS. BUT THE CURSE OF MY EARLY TRAINING IS THAT I FEEL COMPELLED TO WRITE MY OWN SPEECHES. THIS IS HARD WORK AND AT THIS STAGE IN MY CAREER WOULD NOT BE UNDERTAKEN EXCEPT FOR THE SINCERE BELIEF THAT THE HOPE FOR TOMORROW LIES IN THOSE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WILL WORK HARD TO ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY TRAINING AND SKILLS AND WHO WILL HAVE THE ENERGY, THE DETERMINATION, AND THE INSPIRATION TO MEET THE CHALLENGES THAT WILL INEVITABLY FACE THE MANAGERS OF TOMORROW. MY GENERATION OF MANAGERS HAS, DESPITE OUR BEST ENDEAVORS, LEFT YOU A RICH LEGACY OF UNSOLVED PROBLEMS. |
