Show 13. this agreement in its backlog figure. If these approvals are forthcoming promptly, the plant would begin production in 1977. To give you a better idea of the scope of the program, the four plants ultimately contemplated would require a production rate in the 1980's of 38 million tons of coal annually. The Navajo coal mine now produces 7 million tons of coal annually and is the largest coal mine in the United States. Utah has escalation protection under this contract and I think that the prospects for the program going forward are good. The United States is critically short of natural gas and Navajo has the physical and economic features that make it a natural for synthetic gas production. In Queensland the Saraji Mine is already under construction and some of the facilities are being built so that they can also serve an additional mine at Norwich Park just as Goonyella and Peak Downs share a common townsite, rail facilities, and shiploading facilities. Feasibility work is going forward on Norwich Park but no effort has yet been made to negotiate sales contracts or to secure all the approvals that may be needed from the State and Commonwealth governments. The timetable will depend in part on the coking coal market and in part on the terms and conditions that may be imposed by the new Labor Government. The quality of coal from Norwich Park is as good or better than that from our existing mines, and the initial mine would be sized to an annual production of 3 million tons according to our present thinking. Goldsworthy has also developed additional reserves of 500 million tons in its Mining Area C but development of these must await the time when the Japanese steel industry is again seeking new major sources of supply to meet its expanding requirements. |
