IN ONLY A FEW COUNTRIES IS GOVERNMENT CONDUCTED BY FREELY ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES, MOST ARE GOVERNED BY DICTATORS OR RULED BY AN OLIGARCHIC GROUP. THE DEGREE OF EDUCATION OF POPULATIONS AND THEIR ECONOMIC OR POLITICAL SOPHISTICATION VARY WIDELY. STANDARDS OF ACCEPTABLE CONDUCT VARY WIDELY. YET THESE WIDELY DIFFERING SOCIETIES ARE ATTEMPTING TO LIVE TOGETHER BECAUSE THERE SEEMS TO BE NO OTHER ACCEPTABLE CHOICE. EVER SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF THE '30'S THE THRUST IN THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN INCREASINGLY TO CALL UPON GOVERNMENT TO SOLVE SOCIETY'S PROBLEMS AND TO RIGHT SOCIETY'S WRONGS. WE HAVE WITNESSED A GROWING INTRUSION OF GOVERNMENT INTO OUR DAILY LIVES, AND THIS IS NECESSARILY AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR PERSONAL FREEDOM TO DO AS WE WISH, FOR MORE AND MORE SOMEONE IN GOVERNMENT DECIDES FOR US AND WITHOUT OUR LEAVE WHAT WE SHOULD DO. |
