IT WAS THE THIRD COMPANY I HAD JOINED SINCE LEAVING STANFORD AND IN EACH CASE I CAME ON BOARD APRIL FOOLS DAY. WHEN I JOINED UTAH, THE ANNUAL PROFITS WERE AROUND $L 1/2 MILLION. THERE WERE ABOUT 172 STOCKHOLDERS, MOSTLY DESCENDANTS OF THE ORIGINAL FOUNDERS OR THEIR EARLY BUSINESS ASSOCIATES OR FORMER EMPLOYEES. THE NET WORTH WAS $ 14.8 MILLION. THE GREATER PART OF THE BUSINESS WAS HEAVY ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION BUT HUMBLE BEGINNINGS HAD BEEN MADE IN MINING - A RIGHT MOVE FOR THE WRONG REASONS - |
