Show AN EXECUTIVE SPEECH REPRINT GENERAL ELECTRIC Critical Corporate Issues of the 1980's Edmund W. Littlefield Chairman of the Board Utah International Inc. "Managements are moving from a posture of simply reacting to external forces to a mode of anticipating the issues and even helping to shape the issues." I am honored to appear before you and grateful for the very generous remarks made in presenting me to you. When the invitation to speak here today was extended to me on your behalf by Sir Robert, I contemplated the prospect with some apprehension. It was during the recent Federal and Queensland Presented to Australian Institute of Directors, Melbourne, Australia, March 9, 1978. elections and Utah was receiving what some might describe as "unfavorable press." My situation was not unlike the older sinner who was told by his doctor that he was about to die. Unwilling to let the case rest on a single opinion, he demanded a consultation. When the second doctor confirmed the findings of the first, Pat was satisfied and sent for the priest to perform the last rites. Never in all his experience had the priest heard a confession to rival this one. It contained all the original sins as well as some innovations. Nonetheless the priest said: "Pat, my son, are you willing to embrace the Lord and to renounce the Devil?" Pat hesitated and replied: "Father, I am willing to embrace the Lord, but I can't renounce the Devil. In my position I don't dare risk offending anybody." I am here today because I am willing to run the risk. I am no stranger to Australia, having been a frequent visitor to this country since 1951. In these 27 years I have seen much of Australia. I like Australia and Australians at least with very few exceptions. As the principal officer of Utah International for the last twenty years, Australia has been the primary focus of my working endeavors.
