Show 18. THE MEDIA IS NECESSARILY WRONG, BUT IT CERTAINLY IMPOSES AN EXTRAORDINARY RESPONSIBILITY ON THE MEN AND WOMEN ENGAGED IN JOURNALISM TODAY. IF YOU GO WRONG, THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS LIKELY TO GO WRONG. MISLEADING PRESS LEADS TO BAD POLICY. NOW I DON'T MEAN BY THIS TO SAY THAT THE MEDIA HAVE LED US ASTRAY - YET. FOR THE MOST PART, YOU'RE DOING A GOOD JOB, DEALING WITH VERY COMPLEX AND WHOLLY UNPRECEDENTED ISSUES. BUT THERE ARE CAUSES FOR CONCERN AND I DON'T HEAR THEM ONLY FROM MY MORE PARANOID BUSINESS FRIENDS. LAST MONTH THERE WAS A COLUMN IN TV GUIDE, NOT EXACTLY AN UNFRIENDLY PUBLICATION TO JOURNALISM, BY EDITH EFRON. IT STARTED LIKE THIS: "SOMETHING STUPID AND DANGEROUS IS GOING ON AT THE NETWORKS." SHE IS TALKING ABOUT THE SCARE PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO ROUSE PUBLIC OPINION AGAINST COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS. |
