Show 9. IN JUNE 1943 MY CAREER TOOK A COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED TURN. RALPH DAVIES ASKED THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY TO ASSIGN ME TO THE PETROLEUM ADMINISTRATION FOR WAR. I WAS ONE OF A NUMBER OF ARMY AND NAVY OFFICERS SO ASSIGNED BUT MOST OF THE OTHERS WERE TECHNICAL PEOPLE WHO HAD AS CIVILIANS WORKED ON NEW FUELS FOR AVIATION GASOLINES. THIS REQUEST WAS THE MORE REMARKABLE BECAUSE MY PERSONAL CONTACTS WITH DAVIES WERE LIMITED, TO SAY THE LEAST. WHEN I WENT TO WORK FOR BILL BATES, HE WAS QUICK TO INFORM ME THAT MR. DAVIES WAS A DIFFICULT MAN, DID NOT KNOW BATES WAS HIRING ME, AND THIS NEWS WOULD HAVE TO BE BROKEN TO HIM AT PRECISELY THE RIGHT MOMENT. I HAD BEEN WORKING AT STANDARD FOR TWO MONTHS WHEN I CHOSE TO ATTENDEE ANNUAL STANFORD BUSINESS SCHOOL DINNER -THIS TIME AS AN ALUMNUS, NOT THE STUDENT SPEAKER.
