WE KEPT CLOSE CONTROL OVER NEW INVESTMENT AND THESE DECISIONS WERE MADE ONLY AFTER CAREFUL SCRUTINY AT THE MANAGEMENT LEVEL, AT THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE LEVEL, AND AT THE BOARD LEVEL. A GOOD MINE CAN HIDE BAD MANAGEMENT FOR A LONG TIME FOR MINES VARY WIDELY IN THEIR UNIT COSTS OF PRODUCTION. UNLIKE SOME OF OUR LARGE COMPETITORS WE COULD NOT AFFORD THE LUXURY OF COMPLACENCY. WE COULD NOT REST ON OUR LAURELS BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PLACE TO SIT. WE HAD TO DECIDE WHAT WE WANTED TO DO AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHAT WE DIDN'T WANT TO DO.
