Show 9. THROUGHOUT HISTORY HUMAN SOCIETIES HAVE SOUGHT WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND TO GOVERN THEIR AFFAIRS. THROUGHOUT MOST OF RECORDED HISTORY THE PREDOMINANT FORM OF GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN RULE BY AN INDIVIDUAL OR A RULING CLASS WHO IMPOSED THEIR WISDOM AND THEIR WILL UPON THE SOCIETY AS A WHOLE. OCCASIONALLY VARIOUS SOCIETIES FROM TIME TO TIME HAVE ATTEMPTED TO RULE THEMSELVES AS A REPUBLIC OR AS A DEMOCRACY BUT IT HAS BEEN THE FATE OF MOST DEMOCRACIES TO FAIL. THIS SUGGESTS THAT DEMOCRACIES MAY HAVE AN INHERENT WEAKNESS AND CARRY THE SEEDS OF THEIR OWN DESTRUCTION. THE GREEKS THOUGHT ABOUT THIS, AND NOTED THAT DEMOCRACY CHARACTERISTICALLY DECAYS INTO ANARCHY AS LEADERS CATER MORE AND MORE TO DEMOS THE MOB. THEN, AS THE PEOPLE YEARN FOR ORDER, SOME TYRANT OR A RULING OLIGARCHY TAKES OVER. THE END OF GRECO-ROMAN CIVILIZATION WAS CAESARISM, AND GLOOMY OSWALD SPENGLER PREDICTED |
